Contractions are a common physiological phenomenon during pregnancy and childbirth. The sensation varies from person to person but is generally described as a cyclical process in which the uterine muscles gradually tighten and then relax. Pregnant women may feel periodic tightening and hardening of the abdomen, accompanied by mild pain or discomfort. This pain or discomfort may start in the lower abdomen and gradually spread upward, affecting the entire abdominal area. As contractions intensify, the pain may become more noticeable and severe, and some women may even find it difficult to tolerate. During pregnancy, contractions may be painless and irregular, commonly referred to as Braxton Hicks contractions, which indicate the uterus preparing for labor. During actual labor, contractions become regular and progressively stronger, serving as the primary force driving fetal delivery. Pregnant women should learn to identify and differentiate between various types of contractions and seek timely medical attention when abnormalities occur.
