Disease description:

My husband is 30 years old this year and has suffered from axillary osmidrosis (body odor) for many years. As we eat and sleep together daily, I have recently noticed a slight odor under my own armpits. I would like to ask, is axillary osmidrosis contagious?

Body odor, medically known as axillary odor or bromhidrosis, primarily results from a distinctive odor produced by the interaction between sweat secreted from the axillary apocrine glands and bacteria. This odor is related to individual genetic factors, physical condition, endocrine status, and other personal factors, rather than being transmitted through contact or the air. Body odor cannot be transmitted to others through daily contact such as handshaking, hugging, or sharing personal items. It is not a contagious disease and is not infectious. Although body odor is not contagious, poor personal hygiene may lead to increased bacterial growth, which can worsen symptoms. If individuals are concerned about body odor, it is recommended to improve personal hygiene habits, use antibacterial deodorants or antiperspirants, and, when necessary, visit a dermatologist or plastic surgeon for treatments such as minimally invasive surgical procedures. Treatment options for body odor include maintaining good personal hygiene, using antiperspirants or deodorants, injecting botulinum toxin to reduce sweat gland secretion, and considering surgical treatment in severe cases. Body odor is not contagious; it is a unique physiological phenomenon specific to each individual and requires personal care and medical interventions for improvement.
