Will laser hair removal for underarm hair cause body odor?
I am 22 years old. As summer approaches, I want to remove underarm hair, but I've heard that laser hair removal for underarms may cause body odor. I would like to know whether laser underarm hair removal can lead to body odor.

In general, laser hair removal for underarms does not typically cause body odor (bromhidrosis). Body odor mainly results from the breakdown of sweat produced by the apocrine glands in the armpit area by bacteria on the skin surface, leading to a distinctive smell. The principle of laser hair removal involves using the thermal energy of laser light to destroy hair follicles, thereby inhibiting hair growth and achieving hair removal. During laser underarm hair removal, the laser primarily targets the hair follicles and has minimal impact on the sweat glands, so it generally does not directly cause body odor.
However, if proper underarm hygiene is not maintained after laser hair removal, bacterial growth might increase, potentially worsening body odor. Additionally, improper laser hair removal procedures may lead to inflammation or infection of the underarm skin, which could indirectly affect body odor symptoms. Some individuals may already have underlying factors contributing to body odor, but mistakenly attribute its occurrence to laser hair removal due to psychological factors or increased awareness of underarm odor following the procedure.
It is recommended to undergo laser hair removal at a reputable medical facility with the procedure performed by a qualified physician, and to follow post-operative care instructions provided by the doctor. Laser underarm hair removal is a relatively safe and effective cosmetic procedure, and there is generally no need to be overly concerned about it causing body odor.
