Why is my baby's stool green?
My baby must have eaten something that upset his stomach these past two days—he even had green poop! I'm very worried, but I still want to ask: what causes green stool in babies?
Green stool in infants is a relatively common occurrence in pediatric clinical practice, with possible causes including:
1. Food pigment influence: If the baby consumes large amounts of food containing green pigments, such as spinach, broccoli, or certain ingredients in formula milk, it may cause the stool to appear green.
2. Indigestion: The baby's intestines may not be fully developed, and if food is not properly digested, the stool may appear green.
3. Formula milk allergy or lactose intolerance: Allergy to certain formula milks or lactose intolerance may cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues, including green stool.
4. Rapid digestion: When food passes through the intestines too quickly, bile does not have enough time to be broken down and absorbed, resulting in green-colored stool. This is particularly common in breastfed infants.
5. Infection or inflammation: Certain intestinal infections or inflammatory conditions, such as enteritis, can also cause changes in stool color, including green stool.
When encountering green stool in infants, parents need not be overly concerned. Observe whether the baby's general condition is normal and whether there are other accompanying symptoms. If the baby shows no obvious discomfort, special treatment is generally not required. However, if persistent green stool is accompanied by symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, or vomiting, prompt medical attention should be sought.
