Disease description:

I am 26 years old this year. Recently, I have been coughing continuously, but I don't know the exact reason. A friend told me that eating loquats might help relieve the cough, but I also heard that loquats are considered "cooling" in nature and that some people shouldn't eat them. I would like to ask the doctor: are loquats "heaty" or "cooling"?

In traditional Chinese medicine, loquat is considered a fruit with slightly cold properties. It has functions of clearing the lungs and relieving cough, as well as reducing nausea and vomiting. It is suitable for conditions such as cough caused by lung heat and vomiting. Loquat is rich in organic acids, which can stimulate secretion of digestive glands, increase appetite, and aid digestion and absorption. It is also high in vitamin C, carotene, and various minerals, offering positive effects on enhancing immune function and protecting vision.

Loquat contains amygdalin, which can be hydrolyzed in the body to produce hydrogen cyanide, providing a certain cough-relieving effect. It can effectively treat excessive phlegm and cough caused by lung heat. Loquat can also clear heat from the lungs, replenish qi, and moisten the lungs, showing good efficacy for symptoms such as dry cough with shortness of breath due to lung dryness, and irritability with thirst. In clinical applications, loquat is commonly used as an adjunct in treating respiratory diseases, such as cough and excessive phlegm caused by wind-heat type common cold.

Loquat is a fruit with high nutritional value and certain medicinal benefits. Eating it in moderation is beneficial to health. However, due to its slightly cold nature, individuals with deficiency-cold in the spleen and stomach should consume it in moderation to avoid diarrhea or indigestion caused by excessive intake.
