Gastric erosion, medically referred to as acute or chronic gastric mucosal erosion, is a superficial injury of the gastric mucosa, commonly seen in conditions such as gastritis and peptic ulcers. When the integrity of the gastric mucosa is compromised, contact between irritants such as food and gastric acid and the damaged area may cause pain. Characteristics of pain in patients with gastric erosion may include:

1. Persistent pain: If not treated promptly or if dietary habits are improper, pain may persist.

2. Factors that worsen pain: Consumption of spicy, greasy, or overly acidic foods may intensify the pain.

3. Nature of the pain: Typically described as a dull or burning pain, it may be accompanied by upper abdominal discomfort, heartburn, and other symptoms.

However, not all patients with gastric erosion experience persistent dull pain. The presence and severity of symptoms are influenced by multiple factors, including the extent and location of the erosion, whether there is a concurrent infection (such as Helicobacter pylori infection), dietary habits, and psychological stress. Patients may also experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss. These symptoms may result from gastrointestinal dysfunction caused by long-term inflammatory responses.
