Hiccups, medically known as singultus, are a phenomenon caused by sudden contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. They are commonly associated with eating too quickly, swallowing air, emotional excitement, acid reflux, and other factors.

Strenuous exercise may also lead to increased oxygen consumption and accelerated whole-body blood circulation, which can stimulate the diaphragm and subsequently trigger hiccups. This condition is usually relieved through rest. Improper diet is another common cause. Consuming excessive high-fat foods or overeating may disrupt gastrointestinal function, leading to hiccups. Moreover, eating gas-producing foods such as sweet potatoes and soy products may increase gastrointestinal gas, thereby increasing the frequency of hiccups. In addition, side effects of certain medications, excessive alcohol consumption, and even stress and anxiety may induce hiccups. Digestive system disorders, such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastroesophageal reflux, may also cause hiccups upon physical activity due to abnormalities in the tissues or organs of the digestive system.

If hiccups are mild and temporary, they usually do not require special treatment and can be relieved by breath-holding, drinking water, deep breathing, or other methods. However, if hiccups persist for a prolonged period, affect normal life, or are accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, vomiting, or weight loss, prompt medical attention is recommended.
