Hello, I have been experiencing loss of appetite and general fatigue lately. Could this be related to poor spleen and stomach function in traditional Chinese medicine?

When spleen function is impaired, the symptoms can be mainly categorized into the following types:

1. Indigestion: Dysfunction of the spleen in transportation and transformation may lead to poor appetite, difficulty in digesting food, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, and constipation.

2. Fatigue and weakness: The spleen is the source of blood and qi production. Spleen deficiency can result in insufficient blood and qi, manifesting as general weakness, easy fatigability, and even pale complexion and shortness of breath with reluctance to speak.

3. Edema: The spleen governs the transportation and transformation of body fluids. When the spleen is weak, it fails to properly regulate fluid metabolism, leading to fluid retention in the body, which may cause limb swelling. In severe cases, prolapse of internal organs such as gastric ptosis or uterine prolapse may occur.

4. Bleeding tendencies: When the spleen fails to control the blood, patients often experience symptoms such as pale complexion, reduced appetite, and fatigue. Female patients may present with excessive menstrual bleeding or metrorrhagia.

5. Abnormal tongue appearance: Damp-heat in the spleen and stomach is a common manifestation of spleen dysfunction. Patients commonly exhibit a pale, swollen tongue with tooth marks along the edges, a greasy white coating on the tongue, and a bitter taste in the mouth.

6. Emotional changes: The spleen is related to emotional regulation. Spleen deficiency may lead to emotional fluctuations such as irritability and depression.

Symptoms of impaired spleen function may involve multiple aspects. If the above symptoms occur, timely medical consultation is recommended.
