Brain atrophy is a serious neurodegenerative disease whose consequences may involve multiple aspects:
1. Cognitive impairment: including significant decline in memory, attention, judgment, and calculation ability, affecting daily life and work capacity. For example, patients may be unable to remember important dates and events, and may struggle to complete simple mathematical calculations.
2. Motor dysfunction: impaired balance leading to unsteady gait and increased risk of falls. Muscle weakness, slowed and uncoordinated movements, and even the inability to walk or stand independently may develop.
3. Language impairment: speech becomes slurred, speech rate slows, and expressive difficulties arise, with possible decline in the ability to understand others' speech. Mental and psychological problems: such as anxiety, depression, emotional instability, irritability, and abnormal behaviors. Some patients may experience psychiatric symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions.
4. Difficulty swallowing: affects eating and nutritional intake, potentially leading to complications such as choking and aspiration pneumonia in severe cases.
5. Loss of ability to perform daily living activities: inability to independently complete basic activities such as dressing, washing, and eating, requiring long-term care from others.
