Disease description:

I have inflammation myself, and after some physical activity, I noticed hematuria (blood in urine). I would like to ask, why is there persistent hematuria with a ureteral stent in place?

Hematuria after ureteral stent placement is a common phenomenon, usually temporary, and often related to surgical manipulation, stent irritation, or displacement. Persistent hematuria associated with ureteral stents may be caused by the following factors:

1. Surgical trauma: During the placement of the ureteral stent, mechanical irritation and injury to the urethral, bladder, or ureteral mucosa may occur, leading to localized bleeding.

2. Stent irritation: The presence of the stent causes physical irritation to the ureteral wall. This irritation may intensify during patient movement or changes in body position, resulting in hematuria.

3. Inflammation and infection: Stent placement may disrupt the urethral barrier, allowing bacterial invasion and subsequent inflammation and infection, which can cause local mucosal rupture and erosion.

4. Calculi: If there are stones present in the ureter, stent insertion may displace the stones, causing local injury and bleeding.

5. Allergic reaction: Patients may experience an allergic reaction to the stent material, leading to inflammation and bleeding.

6. Displacement or improper placement: The stent may become displaced or improperly positioned, causing friction against the urethral, bladder, or ureteral walls, resulting in hematuria.
