Is a ureteral cyst serious?
Recently, I went to the hospital due to abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a ureteral cyst. Doctor, I would like to ask how serious a ureteral cyst is?

Ureterocele is a congenital or acquired condition characterized primarily by distension at the terminal end of the ureter. The severity mainly depends on the size and location of the cyst, as well as whether it affects normal urine excretion. Details are as follows:
1. Ureterocele is a benign congenital disease and does not undergo malignant transformation. Therefore, it is generally not serious if the cyst is small and no obvious adverse symptoms are present. Regular follow-up visits at the hospital are recommended.
2. Large ureteroceles may cause urinary tract obstruction, increase the risk of urinary tract infections, and even impair kidney function. When the cyst is large, it may block the ureter, causing ureteral dilation, and in severe cases, hydronephrosis. In addition, it may cause symptoms such as flank or side abdominal pain, hematuria, frequent urination, urgency, dysuria, and may even affect kidney function.
3. If ureterocele causes recurrent urinary tract infections, hydronephrosis, pain, or other symptoms, surgical intervention may be required. Treatment options include endoscopic surgery, open surgery, or laparoscopic surgery aimed at relieving obstruction and preserving kidney function.
