My younger aunt went to the hospital for a routine physical examination due to feeling unwell. Are her heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels normal?

Dr. Tian Hongbo

At rest, the heart rate (i.e., the number of heartbeats per minute) of a healthy adult generally remains within the range of 60 to 100 beats per minute. The ideal heart rate should be between 55 and 70 beats per minute. Athletes often have slower heart rates than the average adult due to long-term physical training, and in some cases, their heart rates can even drop as low as 40 beats per minute.

Blood pressure, which refers to the pressure exerted by blood against the blood vessel walls, normally falls within a systolic pressure (high pressure) range of 90 to 120 mmHg and a diastolic pressure (low pressure) range of 60 to 89 mmHg. This range helps maintain normal blood circulation and proper organ function throughout the body.

Blood oxygen saturation refers to the degree of oxygen binding to hemoglobin in the blood. Under normal conditions, blood oxygen saturation should be between 95% and 100%, while the arterial blood oxygen partial pressure remains within the range of 60 to 100 mmHg.

The normal values for heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation can all be influenced by various factors, including individual differences, age, gender, health status, and level of daily activity.
