I previously had blood drawn, and the results showed low HDL cholesterol. My doctor advised me to improve my diet. Could you please tell me what foods I should eat to address low HDL cholesterol?

Dr. Tian Hongbo

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is referred to as "good cholesterol" because it helps remove low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad cholesterol") from the bloodstream, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. If HDL levels are low, they can be improved through dietary adjustments:

1. Whole grains and dietary fiber: staple foods such as oats, whole wheat bread, sorghum, and brown rice, as well as fresh vegetables and fruits. These foods help lower LDL and indirectly increase the proportion of HDL.

2. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids: such as deep-sea fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), flaxseeds, and chia seeds. These fatty acids can significantly raise HDL levels and help reduce inflammation in the body.

3. Foods rich in monounsaturated fatty acids: olive oil and nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, and cashews, are all rich in unsaturated fatty acids. These beneficial fatty acids play an important role in regulating blood lipid levels in the body, helping maintain lipid balance and potentially increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
