Recently, I experience severe dizziness whenever my blood pressure rises, so I bought a sphygmomanometer to measure my blood pressure myself. May I ask, what is the correct method for measuring blood pressure?

When measuring blood pressure, using the correct technique ensures the accuracy of the results. Proper steps for measuring blood pressure:

1. Preparation: Ensure the sphygmomanometer is calibrated and in good working condition. Select an appropriate cuff size based on arm circumference and adjust accordingly. Empty the bladder and sit quietly indoors for 5–10 minutes to stabilize heart rate and blood pressure.

2. Proper Sitting Position: Sit in a chair with a backrest, keep both feet flat on the ground, maintain an upright posture, expose the upper arm, and rest the elbow on a table so that the upper arm is at the same level as the heart.

3. Applying the Cuff: Secure the cuff smoothly around the upper arm, with the center of the cuff positioned directly above the elbow crease. The bottom edge of the cuff should be 2–3 cm above the elbow crease, and the tightness should allow enough space to insert one finger comfortably.

4. Starting the Measurement: Press the start button on the sphygmomanometer. Place the stethoscope (if using a manual device) over the brachial artery pulse. Inflate the cuff to 20–30 mmHg above the estimated systolic pressure, then slowly release the air while observing the gauge readings.

5. Repeat Measurement: To obtain more accurate results, repeat the measurement after 1–2 minutes and calculate the average of the two readings.
