Disease description:

My mother-in-law has had hypertension for more than ten years and has been taking antihypertensive medications. The medications she previously took are no longer effective. Is Irbesartan tablets better than capsules, or vice versa?

When selecting the dosage form of Irbesartan, whether tablet or capsule, the main therapeutic component and mechanism of action are the same. Both are angiotensin-II receptor antagonist antihypertensive medications primarily composed of Irbesartan, indicated for the treatment of hypertension.

The capsule may dissolve slightly faster in the gastrointestinal tract than the tablet, but this difference generally does not significantly affect the overall therapeutic effect of medications like Irbesartan. Irbesartan has a relatively long plasma half-life of approximately 11–15 hours.

In clinical practice, the choice of dosage form largely depends on patient preference, swallowing ability, drug availability, and cost. Some patients may prefer the easier-to-swallow capsule, while others may be more accustomed to tablets.

When choosing between Irbesartan tablets or capsules, consideration should be given to the patient's specific circumstances, the drug brand, dosage strength, and the physician's recommendation. Regardless of the chosen dosage form, Irbesartan should be taken exactly as prescribed, at the correct dose and timing.
