Central venous pressure is an important indicator reflecting the pressure in the right atrium and the thoracic segments of the superior and inferior vena cava.

In general, the normal central venous pressure for adults ranges between 50-120 mmH₂O, which converts to 5-12 cmH₂O. This corresponds to a pressure range of approximately 0.5-1.2 kPa or 0.49-1.18 kPa. In comparison, the normal values for children are relatively lower, typically ranging from 30-100 mmH₂O.

Central venous pressure can be measured via various routes, including the right internal jugular vein, subclavian vein, external jugular vein, or femoral vein. However, the measured values are not constant and may be influenced by factors such as individual emotional fluctuations, vigorous physical activity, and physiological conditions.

Before measurement, it is important to remain in a quiet and resting state to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.

If the central venous pressure is abnormal, it may indicate underlying conditions such as hypovolemia or heart failure. Prompt medical attention is essential.
