Dr. Liu Feng

Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen to various parts of the body. Elevated hemoglobin levels can be caused by multiple factors, primarily categorized into physiological and pathological types.

Physiological factors include long-term residence in high-altitude areas; due to thin air, the body adapts by increasing hemoglobin production to enhance the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Pregnancy is another such factor. Hemoglobin elevations caused by these factors are usually temporary and do not significantly adversely affect the body.

Pathological factors involve various disease states, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary heart disease, polycythemia vera, primary thrombocythemia, and hyperthyroidism. In these conditions, elevated hemoglobin levels may represent an adaptive response to hypoxia or increased metabolic activity, or they may be a pathological manifestation of the disease itself. Emotional stress or intense physical activity can also lead to temporary increases in hemoglobin levels.

If elevated hemoglobin levels are detected, timely medical consultation is recommended.
