Artificial bones, medically referred to as bone substitute materials or prostheses, are primarily used to repair bone defects caused by disease, trauma, or surgery. Their service life is influenced by multiple factors, including material properties, patient age, activity level, surgical techniques, and postoperative rehabilitation.

Materials:

1. Prostheses made from metal alloys (such as titanium alloys and cobalt-chromium alloys), due to their high strength and excellent wear resistance, typically have a service life of 15–20 years or more.

2. Ceramic materials (such as zirconia and alumina) demonstrate excellent biocompatibility and wear resistance, and theoretically may offer an even longer service life.

3. Polymer materials (such as polymethyl methacrylate) are prone to wear and therefore have a relatively shorter service life, approximately 10–15 years.

A patient's age, daily activity level, precision of surgical technique, and the quality of postoperative rehabilitation are also closely related to the service life of artificial bones.
