The most prominent physical sign of anemia
I used to think that being very thin meant having anemia, but some people are actually not anemic. May I ask, what are the most prominent physical signs of anemia?
The most prominent physical sign of anemia is pallor of the skin and mucous membranes. This sign primarily results from redistribution of effective blood volume in anemia, leading to reduced blood supply to relatively less vital organs such as the skin and mucous membranes, thereby causing pallor.
Pallor mainly manifests in the conjunctiva of the eyelids, lips and oral mucosa, nail beds, and the palms. When pallor is observed in these areas, anemia should be suspected and medical evaluation sought promptly.
In addition, patients may experience nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, palpitations, and shortness of breath. In cases of severe anemia, cardiac compensatory signs such as cardiac enlargement and arrhythmias may occur, as well as gastrointestinal symptoms like loss of appetite and abdominal distension.
In severe anemia, patients may also develop signs including cardiac enlargement and even heart failure. Furthermore, due to central nervous system hypoxia, patients may experience symptoms such as dizziness, headache, tinnitus, and difficulty concentrating.
