Disease description:

I have to work in front of a computer for long hours every day due to my job, and my eyes often feel dry and fatigued as a result. Therefore, I frequently use eye drops. However, recently I have noticed that my eyes seem to become uncomfortable more easily. I would like to know what the potential side effects of regular eye drop usage are, and whether long-term use could potentially cause more serious damage to my eyes.

Using eye drops, especially frequently or for prolonged periods, may cause side effects.

1. Dry eye syndrome: Some eye drops contain preservatives, and long-term use may damage the conjunctival goblet cells of the eyes, leading to symptoms such as dryness, pain, or redness. In severe cases, it may cause dry eye syndrome.

2. Glaucoma: If the eye drops contain corticosteroids, prolonged use may elevate intraocular pressure, which can lead to glaucoma. Glaucoma is a chronic progressive eye disease that significantly affects vision and visual fields.

3. Drug toxicity reactions: Long-term use of eye drops containing preservatives may damage the conjunctival goblet epithelial cells, which can severely result in corneal ulcers or perforation.

4. Reduced natural tear production: Artificial tear eye drops are generally safe, but excessive use may cause dependency and reduce the natural tear production of the eyes.

Therefore, no type of eye drops should be used for prolonged periods or in excessive amounts without medical supervision to avoid causing harm to the eyes.
