The white part of the eye, commonly known as the sclera, may appear yellow. This condition is usually a symptom known as jaundice. Jaundice is caused by elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced by the liver, primarily from the breakdown of aged red blood cells. Under normal circumstances, the liver converts excess bilirubin into water-soluble substances, which are then excreted from the body through bile.

Common causes:

1. Improper diet: Consuming excessive amounts of foods rich in carotenoids, such as carrots, broccoli, and spinach, may cause the white part of the eye to turn yellow. This condition typically does not require special treatment and symptoms usually improve with dietary adjustments.

2. Prolonged lack of sleep: Frequently staying up late and insufficient sleep can also lead to yellowing of the sclera. It is recommended that patients maintain good sleep habits and ensure adequate rest.

3. Eye diseases: Conditions such as chronic conjunctivitis may cause blood vessels to become congested in the white part of the eye. If left untreated, this may lead to yellowing of the sclera.
