Are there any side effects of taking melatonin?
I haven't been able to fall asleep the past couple of nights, usually dozing off only around two or three o'clock in the morning. My friend gave me some melatonin, saying that taking a bit before bedtime might help me sleep better. I'm wondering if regularly taking melatonin might have any side effects?
Common side effects of melatonin:
1. Gastrointestinal irritation: Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation after taking melatonin.
2. Headache: Long-term use of melatonin may cause headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, and even potentially trigger emotional disturbances such as temporary feelings of depression or irritability.
3. Weight gain: Melatonin may affect hormone levels, leading to weight gain or body fat accumulation in some individuals.
4. Worsening insomnia: Prolonged or excessive use of melatonin may interfere with the body's natural melatonin secretion and cause disruptions in sleep rhythms.
5. Other side effects: These may include frequent nightmares, memory decline, increased prolactin release, allergic reactions, elevated risk of stroke, general malaise, and withdrawal effects.
Although melatonin can help improve sleep, it should be used cautiously and according to medical advice to avoid long-term or excessive usage.
