How long does a gastroscopy take?
Due to my stomach condition, I need to undergo a gastroscopy. I would like to ask the doctor how long the gastroscopy procedure takes.
Gastroscopy, known as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, is a commonly used diagnostic method. The entire examination process usually does not take long, typically lasting between 15 to 30 minutes.
Prior to the examination, the doctor will thoroughly explain the procedure and necessary precautions to the patient and may administer sedatives to reduce discomfort. During the procedure, patients may experience mild throat discomfort or a feeling of bloating, but most individuals tolerate it well. After the examination, some patients may continue to feel minor discomfort, such as a sore throat or abdominal bloating, although these symptoms typically disappear quickly.
Although gastroscopy is a relatively safe diagnostic procedure, there are some risks involved, such as bleeding or perforation. However, the incidence of such complications is very low.
After completing the examination, patients generally need to rest briefly in the examination room until the local anesthetic effect in the throat wears off and there are no significant discomfort symptoms before leaving.
