Can lumbar spinal stenosis heal on its own?
Due to leg pain and numbness, a hospital examination revealed lumbar spinal stenosis. Can this condition heal on its own?

Lumbar spinal stenosis generally cannot resolve spontaneously. It is a progressive condition usually caused by factors such as spinal osteoarthritis and degenerative changes. The narrowing of the spinal canal can compress the nerve roots or cauda equina, leading to symptoms including low back pain, leg pain, numbness and weakness in the lower limbs, and intermittent claudication.
1. Mild lumbar spinal stenosis: With appropriate rest, physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle modifications such as weight reduction and strengthening of the lumbar musculature, symptoms may improve. Mild lumbar spinal stenosis may not progress and, to a certain extent, may appear to "heal spontaneously," although this does not mean that the actual space within the spinal canal has increased, but rather that symptoms have been controlled.
2. Moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis: Particularly in cases accompanied by significant neurological dysfunction, more aggressive treatment measures are usually required, including surgical intervention. Surgery can directly address the spinal stenosis through decompression and fusion techniques, thereby relieving symptoms.
