Nail indentation, referred to as "koilonychia" or "spoon nails," is a condition characterized by depressions or concave areas on the nail plate surface. This condition may be caused by various factors, including but not limited to the following:
1. Nutritional factors: The main component of nails is keratin. Deficiencies in protein, calcium, zinc, potassium, and other trace elements, as well as vitamins such as vitamin A and B complex, may lead to pitting or indentation of the nails. This is usually associated with an unbalanced diet or poor nutrient absorption.
2. Chronic diseases: Conditions such as thyroid dysfunction, heart disease, diabetes, and lung diseases may indirectly affect nail growth and structure by impacting the body's overall health status.
3. Trauma: Injury to the nail or its base—for example, from hitting or squeezing—may also result in temporary nail indentation.
4. Infections: Fungal infections or other types of infections may also cause changes in nail morphology, including indentation.
