Fastest way to reduce swelling in the ankle
My ankle suddenly started swelling for no apparent reason, and now it's somewhat painful to walk, with a visible indentation when pressed. I've tried applying ice packs, which seemed to help a little, but the swelling remains. I want it to go down as soon as possible; I wonder if there are any better ways to help reduce the swelling?

Ankle swelling is usually associated with sprains, fractures, overuse, or inflammation. Commonly used effective methods include:
1. Cold compress: During the initial stage of ankle swelling, specifically within the first 24-48 hours after injury, applying a cold compress is the preferred method. It reduces blood flow to the swollen area by constricting blood vessels, thereby alleviating swelling and pain. Cold compress materials can include ice packs or cold towels; each application should not be too long to avoid skin frostbite.
2. Hot compress: A hot compress can be used 48 hours after the swelling occurs. Heat therapy promotes blood circulation, accelerating the dissipation of inflammation and absorption of swelling. Hot compress materials can include hot water bottles or hot towels; the temperature should be moderate to avoid burning the skin.
3. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Such as ibuprofen capsules, which can effectively reduce pain and inflammation.
4. Physical therapy: After the acute phase, physical therapies such as ultrasound treatment or electrical stimulation may be considered to promote blood circulation and accelerate recovery.
5. Functional exercises: Appropriate ankle movements can help prevent joint stiffness and promote rehabilitation.
