Ankle edema, commonly referred to as ankle swelling, is a frequent symptom that may be caused by various factors.

1. Trauma and Inflammation: Trauma to the ankle area, such as sprains or impacts, may damage local muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues, leading to inflammatory edema. Additionally, inflammatory exudation following injury to small blood vessels can also contribute to swelling.

2. Circulatory Disorders: Prolonged standing, sitting, or the formation of deep vein thrombosis in the lower limbs may impair venous return, causing blood to accumulate in the ankle area and resulting in edema.

3. Lymphatic System Issues: The lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste and excess fluids from the body. If the lymphatic system is damaged, lymphatic fluid may not drain properly, causing localized edema.

4. Heart Disease: In heart failure, the heart's ability to pump blood decreases, leading to increased venous pressure. Particularly in right-sided heart failure, venous return in the lower limbs becomes obstructed, making ankle swelling more likely.

5. Kidney Disease: Abnormal kidney function, such as in nephritis or nephrotic syndrome, can lead to imbalances in the body's water and electrolyte levels, resulting in edema.
