How many years does the rabies vaccine provide protection in humans?
I previously received the rabies vaccine and would like to know how many years it can protect me. I heard the duration is not fixed; how long does the rabies vaccine last in humans?

After completing the full course of rabies vaccination, the antibodies produced in the human body can provide protection for a certain period. However, this duration can be influenced by various factors. The variation in effectiveness is as follows:
1. Generally, after completing the full course of rabies vaccination, the protection can last in the human body for approximately 6 months to 12 months.
2. Antibody decline: If there is another rabies exposure within 6 months after vaccination, re-vaccination is usually not necessary. However, if the exposure occurs more than 6 months after vaccination, a booster dose or a complete re-vaccination regimen may be considered depending on specific circumstances.
3. Management after re-exposure: If another exposure occurs between 6 months and 1 year after completing the vaccination, it is recommended to receive a booster dose. If the exposure occurs more than 1 year after vaccination, a complete re-vaccination schedule is required.
For certain high-risk groups, such as veterinarians, animal control personnel, or individuals living or working in areas with a high incidence of rabies, it is recommended to regularly monitor antibody levels to ensure ongoing protection. If antibody levels fall below the protective threshold, a booster dose may be required.
