Adverse Effects of Glimepiride Capsules
I have diabetes and am taking glimepiride to control my blood sugar. Recently, I noticed a decrease in urine output. May I ask, what are the side effects of glimepiride capsules?
Glimepiride capsules are a medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, belonging to the sulfonylurea class of insulin secretagogues. Although it effectively controls blood glucose levels, it may also cause some side effects:
1. Hypoglycemia: This is the most common side effect, particularly occurring in elderly or frail patients, during the initial phase of treatment, in patients with irregular food intake, alcohol consumption, or impaired liver or kidney function. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include palpitations, sweating, tremors, and in severe cases may lead to coma or even be life-threatening.
2. Gastrointestinal discomfort: Such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
3. Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions such as itching, redness, urticaria, and in severe cases may develop difficulty breathing, decreased blood pressure, or even shock.
4. Weight gain: Long-term use may lead to weight increase.
5. Blood-related issues: In rare cases, it may cause anemia or leukopenia.
6. Liver function abnormalities: It may cause damage to liver and kidney function, as the drug is metabolized through the liver and kidneys, and long-term use may increase the burden on these organs.
