Packed red blood cells or washed red blood cells should ideally be started within 4 hours after being removed from the blood bank. This 4-hour timeframe includes the time required to transport the blood from the blood bank to the ward and to prepare for the transfusion.
1. Warming process: After being removed from cold storage (typically 2-6°C), the blood needs to be allowed to warm to room temperature for a period of time, usually 15 to 30 minutes.
2. Transfusion time: The warmed blood should be administered to the patient as soon as possible. It is generally recommended that the time from removal from the blood bank to the start of transfusion should not exceed 30 minutes.
3. Total duration: Once the transfusion is started, it should be completed as quickly as possible. Generally, the total time from removal from the blood bank to completion of the transfusion should not exceed 4 hours.
After the transfusion is completed, any remaining blood should not be returned to the blood bank, but should be disposed of according to the medical facility's waste handling procedures.
