Recently, I have been feeling weak overall, noticed irregular heartbeats, and experience fatigue easily. I heard this might be due to low potassium. Could you please explain what symptoms are associated with low potassium?

Dr. Tian Hongbo

Hypokalemia refers to a condition in which the concentration of potassium ions in the blood falls below 3.5 mmol/L. Potassium ions are key to maintaining normal neuromuscular function, ensuring stable cardiac rhythm, and preserving fluid balance inside and outside of cells. Symptoms of hypokalemia include:

1. In mild cases, individuals may experience slight fatigue and some muscle weakness.

2. As the condition worsens, muscle weakness intensifies and may be accompanied by cramps or paralysis, particularly affecting the muscles of the limbs.

3. Cardiac involvement may occur, including abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) results, irregular heartbeat, and feelings of chest tightness.

4. Gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, or constipation may develop.

5. Long-term hypokalemia can affect kidney function, leading to increased urination and nocturia (frequent nighttime urination).

To prevent hypokalemia, it is important to maintain a balanced diet rich in potassium-containing foods such as bananas, potatoes, and spinach. Regular medical check-ups are also recommended to monitor electrolyte levels.

If you experience any symptoms suggestive of hypokalemia, do not attempt to self-diagnose; seek prompt medical attention at a hospital.
