Why do my arms and legs often cramp?
Recently, while sitting, I often feel that my arms and legs keep cramping. I would like to ask the doctor what could be causing this?

The main causes of frequent muscle cramps in the arms and legs include the following:
1. Electrolyte deficiency: A lack of calcium and magnesium can increase neuromuscular excitability, thereby triggering cramps.
2. Maintaining the same posture for prolonged periods, overuse of muscles, and age-related decline in muscle elasticity may also cause cramps.
3. Vitamin D deficiency: Vitamin D aids in calcium absorption and utilization. Its deficiency can affect bone health and lead to muscle spasms.
4. Hyperthyroidism: Patients with this condition have an increased metabolic rate, causing muscles to remain in a state of high tension, which makes cramping more likely.
5. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy: Prolonged high blood sugar levels can damage peripheral nerves, leading to sudden muscle contractions and cramps.
It is recommended to maintain adequate hydration, follow a balanced diet, perform appropriate stretching, and engage in muscle-strengthening exercises. Additionally, avoid maintaining the same posture for extended periods and change positions regularly. If cramps are frequent and severe enough to affect daily life, prompt medical consultation is advised.
