Piriformis syndrome is a common lower limb nerve compression disorder that primarily affects the sciatic nerve. This condition is usually caused by abnormalities or inflammation of the piriformis muscle, leading to compression of the sciatic nerve as it passes beneath or through the muscle, thereby causing a series of symptoms.

1. Buttock pain: Pain may start in the buttock and extend downward to the back of the thigh, calf, and even the foot. The pain can be dull, sharp, or have a burning quality.

2. Numbness and stiffness: Due to compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, patients may experience numbness in the lower limbs, especially in the thigh and calf areas. At the same time, the lower limb muscles may become stiff and weak due to impaired nerve conduction. It can also cause reduced sensation in the skin of the lower limbs, manifested as decreased sensitivity to touch, temperature, and other sensory stimuli.

3. Restlessness: Prolonged sitting or standing may exacerbate the pain, and patients may find it necessary to frequently change positions to relieve discomfort.

4. Muscle tightness or spasms: The piriformis muscle or related muscles may experience tightness or spasms, further worsening the symptoms.
