Valsartan: Mechanism of Action and Side Effects

Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist primarily used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. It works by blocking the binding of angiotensin II to its receptors, thereby lowering blood pressure, reducing the burden on the heart, and improving cardiac function. Valsartan also has a protective effect on the kidneys, particularly in conditions such as diabetic nephropathy.

Although valsartan has relatively few side effects, some patients may experience mild symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or nausea after taking the medication. These side effects usually occur at the beginning of treatment or following a dose adjustment, and most patients can tolerate them. In a small number of patients, more serious adverse effects such as renal dysfunction and hyperkalemia may occur, which require monitoring.

During treatment with valsartan, regular monitoring of blood pressure, renal function, and other relevant parameters should be conducted to ensure safe medication use. Valsartan should be avoided by pregnant and lactating women, as well as individuals allergic to its components.
