The phenomenon of heartbeat alternating between fast and slow is known as arrhythmia, or medically termed "cardiac arrhythmia." This condition can be caused by various factors. In a resting state, if the heart rate fluctuates between fast and slow, physiological variations such as respiratory sinus arrhythmia should first be ruled out, which is a normal phenomenon.

Specifically, when the fast and slow heartbeats occur alternately without a regular pattern, it is likely caused by arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a common type of arrhythmia characterized by rapid and disorganized atrial contractions, resulting in an irregular ventricular rate. However, if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, syncope, extreme fatigue, or other discomforts, it may indicate pathological arrhythmia, and prompt medical evaluation and treatment are necessary. The physician may recommend tests such as electrocardiogram (ECG), Holter monitoring, blood tests, or echocardiography to identify the exact cause and formulate an appropriate treatment plan.

If diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, treatment strategies may include pharmacological therapy, electrical cardioversion, or catheter-based radiofrequency ablation, depending on the patient's specific condition.
