Why Do People Snore
My friend told me that I snore when I sleep. I think it's terrible. Why do people snore?

Snoring, a common manifestation of sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome, is primarily caused by partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. Specific causes include:
1. Obesity: Obesity is a significant factor, particularly excess fat in the neck and abdominal areas, which can lead to a narrowed airway and increase the likelihood of snoring.
2. Muscle relaxation: During sleep, the muscles in the throat relax, causing the pharyngeal cavity to narrow. As air passes through, it vibrates the soft tissues, producing sound.
3. Improper sleeping position: For example, snoring may occur when lying on the back due to the tongue falling backward.
4. Anatomical abnormalities: Such as enlarged tonsils, deviated nasal septum, and retrognathia, all of which can lead to a narrowed upper airway.
5. Excessive fatigue: After physical or mental exertion, individuals often fall asleep immediately upon returning home. To take in more oxygen and relieve fatigue, they may unconsciously breathe through the mouth, increasing vibration of the soft tissues such as the soft palate, resulting in snoring during sleep.
