AIDS phobia, commonly referred to as HIV anxiety or fear of AIDS, is an irrational and excessive fear of AIDS. Individuals often suspect that they have been infected with the HIV virus or experience extreme fear of becoming infected, which may be accompanied by obsessive-compulsive behaviors such as excessive concern with cleanliness. This fear may stem from misunderstandings about AIDS, a lack of accurate knowledge, or incorrect assessment of the risk of infection.

Manifestations of AIDS phobia vary widely and commonly include: persistent worry about possible HIV infection, repeated HIV testing—even negative results fail to alleviate concerns. Patients may experience intense discomfort regarding physical contact with others, excessively worry about contracting HIV through everyday contact, sexual activity, or blood exposure, even when they are not in a high-risk environment. Additionally, they may excessively focus on health-related information concerning AIDS and avoid situations that may trigger anxiety, such as public restrooms or blood donation centers.

AIDS phobia is a psychological issue that can be understood and treated; the key lies in improving public scientific understanding of AIDS.
