What Causes Insomnia in Adolescents?
My daughter is under considerable academic pressure and often experiences insomnia. What causes insomnia in adolescents?
Adolescent insomnia has multiple causes, primarily including the following factors:
1. Environmental factors: Noisy, overly bright, excessively cold, or hot sleeping environments, as well as uncomfortable beds and pillows, can all affect adolescents' sleep quality.
2. Physical factors: Certain physical conditions, such as fever, joint pain, leg cramps, and nutritional deficiencies like lack of vitamin D and trace elements, may lead to insomnia. In addition, overeating or consuming greasy food for dinner, and inappropriate physical activity before bedtime can also disrupt sleep.
3. Psychological factors: Psychological factors such as heavy academic pressure, disharmonious family environments, anxiety, and emotional stress are common causes of insomnia in adolescents. Prolonged mental stress may lead to depression or neurasthenia, further affecting sleep.
4. Unhealthy habits: Excessive use of electronic devices, drinking tea or coffee at night, prolonged smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, irregular sleep schedules, and staying up late all interfere with adolescents' normal sleep patterns.
To address adolescent insomnia, it is recommended to start with improvements in the sleep environment, adjustments to lifestyle habits, and relief of psychological stress.
