Hysteria, also known as hysterical neurosis or functional neurological disorder, is a mental disorder caused by psychological factors. Its main characteristics include acute onset of transient mental and physical disturbances, such as sensory, motor, and autonomic dysfunction, although these disturbances have no organic basis. The causes of hysteria are mainly related to psychological factors and heredity. Individuals with hysterical personality traits, such as being emotionally expressive, highly suggestible, and self-centered, are more susceptible to developing the condition.

Hysteria presents with a variety of symptoms, which may include emotional outbursts, impaired consciousness, fainting, loss of voice, visual disturbances, pain, and paralysis. These symptoms typically arise under psychological influences and are often reversible. Treatment for hysteria requires psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy, to help patients understand and manage their psychological issues. When necessary, medication may also be used to manage accompanying symptoms of anxiety or depression.

In addition, patients should maintain an optimistic and positive attitude, engage in open communication, and seek support from family and society to promote recovery.
