Disease description:

Not long ago, I was diagnosed with a perianal abscess and advised to undergo surgery, but I haven't had the procedure yet due to time constraints. I took medication for one day and used potassium permanganate sitz baths. I would like to learn more about the symptom presentation of perianal abscesses.

Perianal abscess, also known as perirectal abscess, mainly presents with the following symptoms:

1. Local pain: This is the most typical symptom of perianal abscess. Patients experience severe pain around the anus, especially during bowel movements, sitting, or walking, when the pain intensifies.

2. Redness and swelling: The infected perianal tissues exhibit noticeable swelling and redness, forming a perianal protrusion. These inflamed areas are usually painful and tender to touch, and may feel warm.

3. Difficulty with defecation: Pain and swelling caused by the perianal abscess can lead to difficulty in passing stool. Patients may feel the urge to defecate but have trouble doing so, or may experience severe pain during bowel movements.

4. Increased discharge: After the formation of an abscess, patients may notice purulent discharge around the anus, which may sometimes be accompanied by a foul odor.

5. Systemic symptoms: In severe cases of abscess, patients may also develop systemic symptoms such as fever and fatigue, which are immune responses of the body to the infection.

Patients should seek medical attention promptly upon experiencing symptoms.
