I suppose I'm considered an older pregnant woman—I'm already 29 years old and this is my first pregnancy, now in the sixth month. However, recently I've experienced some edema during pregnancy. I'd like to ask the doctor, how can swelling in the late stages of pregnancy be relieved?

Dr. Zhang Lu

Edema during late pregnancy can be relieved through the following methods:

1. Adjust diet: reduce intake of high-salt foods, control salt consumption, and avoid pickled foods. Increase consumption of protein-rich foods such as fish, shrimp, soy products, and lean meat. Also, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, such as bitter melon, winter melon, celery, and apples. Appropriately control water intake to avoid fluid retention and sodium buildup in the body.

2. Choose suitable postures and positions: avoid standing or sitting for long periods, pay attention to posture adjustment, and avoid crossing your legs. Try to lie on your left side while sleeping and elevate your lower limbs to promote blood circulation and reduce edema.

3. Wear loose clothing: avoid wearing tight shoes, socks, or pants, as they may affect blood circulation in the lower limbs. Wearing loose and comfortable clothing and shoes can help alleviate swelling.

4. Massage and heat application: soak your feet in hot water daily, apply heat, or massage the swollen areas to promote blood circulation and reduce edema. However, ensure the massage pressure is moderate to avoid discomfort caused by excessive massage.

If the edema is severe or does not improve, it is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment.
