What are the main causes of constipation?
I often experience constipation myself, sometimes only having a bowel movement once a week, and I also have a very small appetite without feeling hungry. I would really like to ask, what are the main causes of constipation?
Constipation is a common digestive system problem characterized primarily by reduced frequency of bowel movements, hard stools, and difficulty in defecation. It can be attributed to multiple factors:
1. Dietary factors: A lack of sufficient dietary fiber and water intake can cause reduced stool volume and dryness, thereby increasing difficulty with bowel movements. It is therefore recommended to increase the intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains in daily meals, while ensuring adequate hydration.
2. Lifestyle habits: Lack of physical activity can slow intestinal motility, causing stools to remain in the intestine for too long, during which excessive water is absorbed, leading to constipation. Additionally, irregular lifestyle patterns, such as frequently changing bowel habits or ignoring the urge to defecate, may also contribute to constipation.
3. Medication side effects: Certain medications, such as painkillers, antidepressants, calcium channel blockers, and some iron supplements, may affect intestinal function and cause constipation.
4. Neurological diseases: Conditions such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis can impair the nervous system's control over the intestines, resulting in constipation.
If constipation persists and significantly affects quality of life, prompt medical attention is recommended.
