Recently, after becoming pregnant and undergoing a medical checkup, I noticed that my blood lipid levels seem to be slightly elevated. May I ask, what is the general blood lipid level during early pregnancy?

Dr. Zhang Lu

In the early stages of pregnancy, a woman's blood lipid levels may change, but the specific values should remain within the normal range. Under normal circumstances, total cholesterol should be below 5.2 mmol/L, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) should be below 3.4 mmol/L, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) should be above 1.0 mmol/L, and triglycerides should be below 1.7 mmol/L.

However, during pregnancy, due to changes in hormone levels, especially increases in progesterone and estrogen, blood lipid levels may rise, particularly triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. This is a natural response of the body preparing for childbirth and breastfeeding.

In early pregnancy, the normal range for total cholesterol is approximately 5.05 mmol/L, and the normal range for triglycerides in early pregnancy is 1.59 mmol/L. The normal value for HDL in early pregnancy is around 2.05 mmol/L, although values greater than 1.04 mmol/L are also considered normal. The normal value for LDL in early pregnancy is approximately 2.60 mmol/L, but should remain below 3.37 mmol/L.
