Dr. Liu Chao

Cyanosis of the lips may involve several factors. Below are some common causes:

1. Genetic factors: In some individuals, lip color may be influenced by genetic factors, resulting in a naturally purplish hue without other discomfort.

2. Hypoxia: One of the most common causes. This is usually associated with lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Long-term chronic hypoxia can cause the lips to turn purple.

3. Cardiovascular diseases: Conditions such as heart failure and congenital heart disease can lead to poor circulation, causing the lips to become cyanotic. These conditions impair cardiac function and affect blood circulation.

4. Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to cold environments can cause blood vessels in the skin and tissues to constrict due to low body temperature, resulting in poor circulation. As a result, the lips may turn purple. This condition usually improves with increased ambient temperature.

5. Poisoning: Certain toxins or medications, such as carbon monoxide poisoning or drug overdose, may cause the lips to darken in color.

6. Respiratory diseases: Conditions such as pneumonia, asthma, and emphysema that impair gas exchange can also lead to cyanosis of the lips.
