Normal postprandial blood glucose levels after fasting
I heard that blood glucose levels need to be measured twice, once fasting and once after a meal. Could you please tell me what are the normal values for fasting and postprandial blood glucose?

The reference ranges for normal fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels are as follows:
1. Fasting Blood Glucose:
The normal level is 3.9–6.1 mmol/L.
If the blood glucose level is higher than 6.1 mmol/L but less than 7.0 mmol/L, it indicates impaired fasting glucose, which is a diagnosis of prediabetes.
- If two separate fasting blood glucose tests on different days both show levels greater than or equal to 7.0 mmol/L, diabetes can be diagnosed.
2. Postprandial Blood Glucose:
This mainly refers to blood glucose levels two hours after eating, with a normal value of less than 7.8 mmol/L.
If the two-hour postprandial blood glucose level is greater than 7.8 mmol/L but less than 11.1 mmol/L.
These values represent widely accepted standards, but specific diagnostic criteria may vary slightly among different healthcare institutions and countries. If in doubt, it is recommended to consult a qualified physician for a more accurate assessment and guidance. Additionally, regular blood glucose monitoring, especially for individuals with a family history of diabetes or other risk factors, is very important.
