How to treat bone spurs
Recently, I have been experiencing persistent pain in my joints. After visiting the hospital for examination, I was diagnosed with bone spurs. Now, even minor physical activity causes severe pain, significantly affecting my daily life. I am very distressed and don't know what to do. I wonder what the appropriate treatment is for bone spurs.
Bone spurs, medically referred to as osteophytes or bone overgrowths, commonly occur in patients with arthritis, especially degenerative arthritis. The treatment of bone spurs mainly aims to relieve symptoms and slow down disease progression. The following are common treatment methods:
1. Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen capsules and celecoxib capsules, can reduce pain and inflammation; intra-articular injections of corticosteroids or sodium hyaluronate can also alleviate symptoms.
2. Physical therapy: Physical treatments such as heat application, cold compresses, ultrasound, and electrotherapy can relieve pain and improve local blood circulation.
3. Exercise therapy: Patients may choose low-impact exercises such as tai chi, jogging, or walking to promote bone metabolism and blood circulation, thus reducing pain.
4. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Treatments such as acupuncture, cupping, and herbal steam therapy can serve as adjuncts to relieve symptoms.
5. Surgical treatment: Patients with severe symptoms, intense pain, or nerve compression may opt for surgical treatment. Minimally invasive surgery or open surgery with internal fixation can be selected to remove the bone spurs and relieve the compression.
