Why does my arm hurt when I wake up from sleep?
My arms have been sore and uncomfortable after waking up recently. Sometimes they even feel a bit numb, and moving around doesn't provide immediate relief. What could be causing this? Is it due to an incorrect sleeping posture?
Waking up with aching arms is usually caused by multiple factors, including sleeping posture, nerve compression, poor blood circulation, and certain health conditions.
1. Postural Compression: Maintaining the same sleeping position for a prolonged period may compress the arm, restrict blood circulation, and cause temporary ischemia, resulting in soreness.
2. Chronic Muscle Strain: Regular participation in heavy physical labor or lifting heavy objects may lead to chronic muscle strain in the arms. Localized pressure during sleep can further aggravate the symptoms.
3. Poor Blood Circulation: Remaining in the same posture for extended periods, such as prolonged use of computers or mobile phones, or improper sleeping posture, can impair circulation. This may lead to oxygen deficiency and lactic acid buildup in arm muscles, causing aching pain. Regular limb movement to promote blood circulation can help alleviate arm soreness.
4. Health Conditions: Diseases such as cervical spondylosis, periarthritis of the shoulder, and carpal tunnel syndrome can cause arm pain due to nerve or vascular compression. Patients with diabetes may also experience arm numbness and pain due to peripheral neuropathy.
If arm soreness is accompanied by persistent pain, numbness, or weakness, immediate medical attention is required.
