I get herpes outbreaks a few days before or during my menstrual period every month. The herpes lesions appear on the vulva and are accompanied by mild pain or itching.

Hives or herpes outbreaks before, during, or after menstruation may be related to multiple factors. For example, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, and such hormonal changes may temporarily weaken immune system function, making the skin more susceptible to viral infections or external irritants, thus triggering herpes outbreaks. If the herpes virus, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), is already present in the body, it is more likely to recur when immunity is compromised. Additionally, increased skin sensitivity, contact dermatitis, use of certain types of contraceptives, or having chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension may also contribute to herpes outbreaks.
It is recommended to seek medical evaluation to confirm whether it is genital herpes. If diagnosed with genital herpes, antiviral medications such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir can be used to shorten the duration of the outbreak and alleviate symptoms.
