
What medication can treat bone spurs?
Recently, I have been experiencing joint pain, especially in my knees and lower back. After visiting the hospital, I was diagnosed with bone spurs (osteophytes). Now, I find it inconvenient to move around, and climbing up and down stairs is especially difficult. I would like to know what medications are available for treating bone spurs.

Osteophyte formation, also known as bone spurs or osteochondrophytes, is a common skeletal condition associated with aging. It is primarily characterized by the growth of additional bone tissue along the edges of bones. This phenomenon usually occurs around joints, especially in weight-bearing areas such as the spine, hips, and knees. Bone spurs themselves do not necessarily cause symptoms, but when the overgrown bone compresses nerves or affects joint function, symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and restricted movement may result.
Below are some commonly used categories of medications and their functions:
1. Calcium supplements: Osteophyte formation is often associated with calcium deficiency. Therefore, calcium supplements such as calcium carbonate tablets, calcium lactate tablets, and calcium gluconate tablets can effectively replenish calcium and serve as an adjunctive treatment for bone spurs.
2. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These medications, such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, celecoxib capsules, and acetaminophen tablets, inhibit prostaglandin synthesis and have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, thereby significantly relieving pain caused by bone spurs.
3. Muscle relaxants: For patients with muscle tension or spasms, short-term use of muscle relaxants may help alleviate symptoms.
4. Local treatments: These include heat application, cold application, and topical analgesic ointments, which act directly on the painful area to provide temporary relief.
In addition to medications, physical therapy, appropriate exercise, weight management, and lifestyle modifications can also help manage osteophyte formation.
