Disease description:

Recently, I have been experiencing wrist pain and numbness in my fingers. After visiting the hospital, I was diagnosed with mouse hand (computer mouse-related repetitive strain injury). Now, I find it difficult to grip objects firmly, which has significantly affected my work and daily life. I am very concerned and wonder what other harmful effects mouse hand might bring. How serious are the negative impacts of mouse hand on my body?

"Mouse hand" usually refers to a repetitive strain injury that occurs from prolonged computer use, especially when using a mouse and keyboard. It is medically known as "carpal tunnel syndrome" or "tenosynovitis." This condition is primarily caused by overuse of the wrists and hands, and may lead to the following health issues:

1. Pain and discomfort: Initially, symptoms may include mild wrist pain or numbness in the fingers, but as the condition worsens, the pain may intensify and even spread to the forearm.

2. Reduced strength: Long-term mouse hand can lead to decreased hand muscle strength and weakened grip, which may cause inconvenience in daily life—for example, making it difficult to open bottle caps.

3. Joint stiffness: Remaining in the same posture or engaging in repetitive movements for extended periods can cause inflammation and adhesion of the soft tissues around the joints, leading to joint stiffness. Patients may experience limited range of motion, particularly noticeable upon waking in the morning or after prolonged rest.

4. Motor dysfunction: Severe cases of mouse hand may result in weakened or lost hand motor ability, manifesting as reduced muscle strength, poor coordination, and unsteady movements. In serious cases, individuals may no longer be able to independently perform daily activities.

5. Nerve damage: Continuous pressure can cause compression of the median nerve, leading to carpal tunnel syndrome, which manifests as tingling or numbness in the fingers.
